Grade
books are not calculated the same in every class. Grades can be built on points
or on weights. Many professors like to utilize weights when creating the
grade book. We recommend reviewing your course syllabus to view if your score
will be based on points or weights. If the grade book in your class
utilizes weights for the grades, there is a different method for calculating
your grade for the class. This tutorial will demonstrate how to calculate a
weighted grade within a course in MyFIRE.
1. Loginto MyFIRE.
2. Navigateto the desired course.
3. Once
in the course, select the Grades tab in the navigation bar at the top of
the page.
4. Once
on the Grades tab, you will be able to see your current scores. Find the
% of your total grade from each grading category. Your class syllabus may also
have these percentages.
a. Assignments - 50% (or 0.50)
b. Exams - 40% (or
0.40)
c. Completion of Lab Hours
- 10% (or 0.10)
5. Calculatethe total number of points that you earned in
each category.
a. Assignments:
80+95+72+84+94=425
b. Exams: 132 + 142 = 274
c. Completion of Lab
Hours: 72 completed
6. Find
the total number of points possible for each grading category.
a. Assignments:
100+100+100+100+100=500 points possible
b. Exams: 150 + 200 = 350 points possible
c. Completion of Lab
Hours: 72 required
7. For
each category, divide the total points you’ve earned by the total points
possible for that category.
a. Assignments: 425/500=0.85
b. Exams: 274/325=0.84 (rounded from 0.8430769…)
c. Completion of Lab
Hours: 72/72=1.00
8. For
each category, multiply that result (your score in step 7) by the % that
category is worth (step 4) to get the final result for that category.
a. Assignments: 0.85x0.50=0.425
b. Exams: 0.84x0.40=0.336
c. Completion of Lab
Hours: 1.00x0.10=0.10
9. Add all of the final results (one per category) together to
get your final grade.
a. Final Grade =
0.425+0.336+0.10=0.861(or 86.1%)
.
