Lumi is an AI tool in MyFIRE that allows instructors to
create content for assignments, discussions, and quizzes. For assignments, Lumi
will generate 3-5 possible ideas for an assignment prompt based on the HTML and
document content in the current module in MyFIRE. After generating, instructors
will be able to select an assignment idea to insert into the instructions field
and make edits to suit the specific context. Please be aware that Lumi only
generates assignment ideas; all detailed instructions and requirements such as
page lengths, word counts, or other parameters will need to be created by the
instructor. This tutorial demonstrates how to generate assignment prompts with
the Lumi tool.
1. Navigate to your course in MyFIRE.
2. Navigate to the Content & Assessments page. Lumi
can only be used when creating activities from the Content & Assessments
page because it uses module content to generate prompts.
3. Locate the module that contains the course
content you would like to base the assignment on. Please Note: Lumi only reads
and uses the content located in the module you are building the activity in to
generate the prompt. This does not include submodules. Only certain activity
types support idea generation. Supported activity types include: assignments,
quizzes, discussions, HTML files, and most file types except PDF. SCORM
packages are also not supported. Content size is limited to 8,000 characters.
Once this character limit is reached, no further characters will be considered.
The character limit may get exhausted when selecting a large activity or
multiple activities.
4. Select Upload/Create.
5. Select New Assignment.
6. When the page refreshes, locate and select Generate Assignment Ideas above the Instructions box.
7. A pop-up window will appear. Select the number
of ideas you would like Lumi to generate, 3, 4, or 5.
8. If desired, select a level from the Bloom’s
Taxonomy drop-down menu. The options include: Create, Evaluate, Analyze, Apply,
Understand, and Remember. For more information on Bloom’s Taxonomy, view this
tutorial.
9. Choose if you would like to include all
activities in the module in Lumi’s content review or if you would like to
select the activities from the module you wish to include in your ideas.
10. If
Select the activities you wish to include in your idea is selected, select the desired activities from the module you would like to include in Lumi’s content
review.
11. Select Generate.
12. A
loading page will appear indicating that assignment ideas are being generated.
This may take a few minutes.
13. When
the page refreshes, the generated ideas will appear. Review the list and decide
if you would like to use one in the assignment you are creating. If there are
no ideas that you would like to use and you would like more to be generated,
you will need to select Cancel and begin the process again.
14. If
there is an idea you would like to use, select the checkbox to the left of the
idea and then select Insert to insert the idea into the assignment instructions
textbox.
15. A
note will appear above the assignment instructions stating that this assignment
idea was AI-assisted and that you as the instructor will need to review for
accuracy before saving. Learners will not know it was AI-assisted unless you choose to communicate this to them.
16. Select Clear Idea in the note if you would like to clear the idea from the
instructions textbox and start again.
17. Further
edit the idea in the instructions textbox. For more information, view the
Utilize the MyFIRE Editor tutorial.
