Respondus LockDown Browser is a tool to deter students from
digitally cheating on a quiz and can be enabled in the quiz tool within the
MyFIRE learning portal. We recommend using Respondus for high-stakes exams such
as midterms and finals. If you are planning to allow the quiz to be an
open-book or open-notes quiz, we do not recommend enabling the Monitor portion
of Respondus within the settings.
When LockDown Browser is in use by a student, the student will
not be able to access the following:
· Menu bar
· Web
Address bar
· Start
Menu
· System
Tray or Dock bar
· Function,
Command, or Shortcut keys
· Right-click
on a Mouse
· Minimization
of the screen
This tutorial demonstrates how to enable Respondus on a quiz in
MyFIRE.
1. Navigate to the course in MyFIRE.
2. Select the Instructor Tools tab at the top of the page in
the navigation bar.
3. Then
select Course Admin.
4. Locate and select Quizzes.
5. The page will refresh to show the quiz tool page. At the top of
the page, select LockDown Browser in the mini navigation bar (second row
of tabs).
6. If you receive a message notification, select Continue.
7. Select the drop-down arrow to the left of the exam title.
8. A drop-down menu will appear. Select settings.
9. Under the LockDown Browser Settings title, select Require
Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam.
10. Additional advanced settings will appear below. They are all
optional. You may choose to enable the following:
a. Password
Settings: Require students to enter a password before taking the exam.
The instructor or administrator must set a designated password if this setting
is desired. Note: If students have one character wrong, they will not be
able to start the exam.
b. Require
Lockdown Browser to view post-exam feedback and results: Select
this option to enable Respondus while students view their exam results. This
will aid in maintaining the integrity of the exam questions while still
allowing students to view their attempts.
c. Lock
Students into the browser until the exam is completed: Select
this option to prevent students from exiting LockDown Browser before an exam is
submitted for grading.
i. This
setting is not recommended outside of a proctored environment.
ii. When this
option is not selected, a student is able to exit the browser early. The
student will be warned twice before being able to close the browser. The
student will be prompted to enter a reason for exiting the exam early. The
student’s response will be available to the instructor from the LockDown
Browser dashboard page.
d. Allow
students to take this exam with an iPad:
i. Students
will be required to download the “LockDown Browser” app from iTunes.
ii. Once students have downloaded Respondus, students will need to access
MyFIRE (myfire.seu.edu) by using a mobile browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.), and
then select Launch LockDown Browser from the quiz page. Safari is not
recommended for MyFIRE users because LockDown Browser may not open correctly.
iii. The LockDown Browser
iPad app is not compatible with Sakai LMS servers. All Sakai users will need to
use a computer with a compatible operating system.
e. Allow
access to specific external web domains: Normally, if an exam contains a
link to an external domain, the links and navigations from that page are
blocked. This setting allows students to access any page or link within the
specified domain. For example, this is useful to provide access to a single
webpage during an exam. Note: Web portals (where students need to sign in)
cannot be added as an external web domain.
i. Multiple
Domains can be entered and must be separated by commas.
ii. Available
for Windows, Mac, and iPad browsers.
iii. Additionally,
the instructor must include the external link inside of the exam itself in the
designated test question. If a student is going to be asked to refer to an
external site in multiple questions, it is recommended to have the external
site listed in each question because once the student closes the external
site, the student cannot go back.
f. Enable
Calculator on the toolbar: A standard or scientific calculator can be
enabled on the LockDown Browser toolbar. There will be an icon at the top of
the screen for the students to access the calculator. Students can copy an
answer from the calculator to an answer field.
g. Enable
Printing from the toolbar: A print button can be enabled on the
LockDown Browser toolbar, allowing the exam screen to be printed. This setting
is not recommended.
11. If you would like to require students to be monitored and
visually recorded during the exam, select Require Respondus Monitor for this
exam.
a. If you are planning to allow the quiz to be an open-book or
open-notes quiz, then we do not recommend enabling the Monitor portion
of Respondus within the settings.
b. If enabled, during the exam, students will be able to see the
word “Recording” in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
12. If the following pop-up window appears, select Continue to
Respondus Monitor.
13. Select the Save + Close button at the bottom of the quiz
area.
