MyFIRE
works with Turnitin to allow assignments to be searched for potential
plagiarism and compiles feedback and student progress into one area for the
student and instructor to review. This tutorial demonstrates how to enable
Turnitin on an assignment within MyFIRE.
1. Navigate to the desired course in MyFIRE.
2. Select the instructor
tools tab at the top of the page.
3. Then select course
admin in the drop-down menu.
4. When the page refreshes,
locate and select assignments.
5. If creating a new
assignment, select new assignment and complete the steps for creating a
new assignment by following these directions.
6. If the assignment has
already been created, select the drop-down arrow to the right of the
desired assignment.
a. Then select edit
assignment from the available options in the menu.
7. Once the assignment is in
editing mode, select submission & completion on the right side of
the page.
8. The submission &
completion section will expand. Locate and select the allowable file
extensions drop-down menu.
a. When the drop-down menu
appears, select compatible with Turnitin. The compatible file types that
Turnitin accepts are htm, html, mht, mhtml, doc, docx, hwp, odt, rtf, pdf, wpd,
txt, ps, pptx, ppt, ppsx, pps, xls, xlsx.
9. Then select evaluation
& feedback on the right side of the page.
10. The evaluation & feedback section will expand. Select manage
turnitin under the Turnitin Integration title.
11. A pop-up window will appear. Check enable similarity
report for this folder. The page will take a moment to refresh.
12. Then under the Display title, select allow learners to
see Turnitin similarity scores in their submission folder. If this option
is not selected, students will not be able to see their similarity score.
13. Next, select determine if all student submissions should be
checked for similarity or if only certain individual submissions should be
checked for similarity by selecting the corresponding radio button.
Automatic similarity checking for all submissions will be selected by
default.
14. Select the enable online grading for this folder checkbox.
a. Determine the transfer
option by selecting either automatically sync as draft in brightspace or manually sync grades as draft in brightspace. ID&T recommends
automatic sync.
Note: If automatically sync as draft in Brightspace is selected, where
there are multiple submissions, the score on the most recently submitted
assignment will be transferred. Instructors have the option of manually
updating to another score.
15. Next, select more options in Turnitin at the
bottom of the pop-up window.
16. Another pop-up window will appear to show additional
Turnitin Submission Settings. Review the settings and select the desired
Turnitin options. ID&T recommends the following settings:
a. Submission Settings:
i. Set the Submit paper
repository drop-down menu is set to standard paper Repository.
ii. Check enable grammar
checking using ETS e-rater technology. Additional options will appear if
selected.
iii. If desiring to add a
rubric to the assignment, add the rubric to the assignment under the evaluation
& feedback section on the assignment creation page. By adding the
rubric within the evaluation settings, this will allow students to view the
rubric prior to submitting to the assignment. ID&T does not recommend
adding a rubric in the Turnitin settings.
b. Compare Against: Ensure that at least one option is selected for
the similarity report to generate. If no option is selected, the similarity
report will not generate.
i. Check student paper
repository
ii. Check current and
archived website content
iii. Check periodicals,
journals, and publications
c. Similarity Report:
i. Determine when the
similarity reports will be generated by selecting the generate similarity
reports drop-down menu. Options include:
· Generate reports immediately (students cannot resubmit)
· Generate reports immediately (students can resubmit until
the due date): After 3 resubmissions, reports generate after 24 hours. ID&T
recommends this option.
· Gernate reports on the due date (students can resubmit
until due date)
ii. If desiring to exclude a
specific type of material from the similarity report, select the type that you
would like to exclude. Options include bibliographic, quoted, and small sources material.
d. Exclude assignment
template: If the assignment
submissions will include a fillable form or format, ID&T recommends
excluding the assignment template by uploading or creating a fillable form that
the students will fill out and submit to the assignment. When a template is
excluded, Turnitin will only check what students add to the form. Excluding
templates works best for non-academic forms where students will not have the
same answer and could be personalized to their experience. Templates must meet
the following requirements:
i. Uploaded files must be
less than 100 MB
ii. Templates must have at
least 1% words of text
iii. Accepted files types for
upload are Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, PostScript, PDF,
HTML, RTF, OpenOffice (ODT), Hangul (HWP), and plain text.
Note: Once a submission
has been made to the assignment, templates can no longer be added or edited.
iv. To upload a fillable form,
select upload template.
1. Then select choose file to locate and attach the desired file.
Note: Ensure the name of
the file is visible after the upload.
v. As an alternative method
to adding a template, instructors have the option to create a custom fillable
form by selecting create custom template.
Note: ID&T recommends for accuracy purposes to utilize
the upload template option instead.
1. Once ‘Create Custom
Template’ is selected, a textbox will appear allowing instructors to type
the form. The textbox utilizes plain text; therefore instructors will not
be able to format the custom template.
2. Once done creating the
form, select Save Template.
17. Once finished selecting the desired Turnitin settings,
select submit at the bottom of the pop-up window.
18. Then select save at the bottom of the Turnitin
Integration pop-up window.
19. When the pop-up window closes, select save and close at the bottom of the Assignment page.
